First Pinoy Idol Gretchen Espina answered the reactions and comments that she bagged the title for Pinoy Idol because of her father’s political connection. Espina was the daughter of Governor Rogelio Espina of Biliran, a smallest provinces in eastern Visayas. According to Espina, “The viewers chose me as their idol. I hope everyone would respect their decision”.
Gretchen Espina, 20 years-old, a former member singer of the UP Ambassadors said “I probably would not have lasted long in the competition if people were not impressed with how I performed. I knew this issue would come up before I joined the contest, but I assure everyone that I fought fairly. Anyway, I was able to prove that I deserved to be here.” “Show biz can be really nasty. I’m ready for it. It’s not any different from politics,” Espina added.
The First Pinoy Idol, Gretchen Espina will received P1 million pesos cash, a condominium, a brand new car, a management contract from GMA Artist Center and recording contract from Sony-BMG. Espina said, “I will share a portion of my winnings with the two other finalists. Napagkasunduan na namin ito (We agreed on this).” Jayann Bautista from Pampanga and Ram Chaves from Cagayan de Oro will received P100,000 from Espina.
The Pinoy Idol was the talent search co-produced by GMA 7 and Freemantle, which is behind the hit reality show “American Idol”. This is the second “Idol” franchise in the Philippines, after the “Philippine Idol” was shown on ABC 5 in 2006.
