Java founder James Gosling give award to a group of computer science students from University of the Philippines who developed the Expert Poisoning System (ESP). This team of computer science students from University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City was among of the teams worldwide who received the 2008 Duke’s Choice Award that recognized the year’s most influential JAVA technology-based application. The winners were chosen by Java Founder James Gosling and along with a panel of Java Technology experts.

The Expert Poisoning System (ESP) wins the 2008 Duke’s Choice Award for the category of “Medical Solutions”.

Category: Medical Solutions
Project: Expert System for Poisoning (ESP)
Developer: University of the Philippines - Dillman
Technologies used: Java SE, Google Web Toolkit (GWT), JClips, Eclipse3.2 Java Development Tools (JDT), MySQL Connector/J

Project ESP is a rule-based clinical decision support system for the diagnosis and management of poisoning. When observing symptoms from a patient, the system outputs a list of possible poisoning types with their corresponding antidote procedures which are considered by medical attendants in diagnosing the patient. Java SE is the key technology in this project, providing developers with the libraries necessary to turn the system design into a real solution that will aid the diagnosis and treatment of poisoning in the Philippines.

According to one of the members of the group in an e-mail interview posted in Inquirer, Gatapia said “It is really a great honor that Mr. James Gosling handpicked us as one of the winners of the Duke’s Choice Awards and also, the fact that we are the first Filipinos to have won this award really made it a special feeling. Of course, we are happy and surprised because we didn’t expect it and when we were doing this project, it is never our intention to join this contest”. The Filipino team Jaredy where composed computer science students namely Diana Bandojo, Reggie Niccolo Santos and Ma. Jaymee Krisette Gatapia.

One of the great highlights in this project is that it was built using Open Source technologies. The team was operating with almost no budget for the software development since they use an open source software. That’s one of the great benefit of using an Open Source.
