Biogas Plant in Payatas
The Payatas dump site is scene of many accidents, mostly people who live there involves in picking up trash. A few years ago, one side of the mountain of garbage collapse and killed numbers of people. The old problematic mountain of garbage will soon be the country’s largest biogas emissions reduction facility. The Quezon City government aims to help the local government in managing the biogas dump site produce by Payatas.
A 1,500 square-meter potion of the Payatas dump site lies the Quezon City Controlled Disposal Facility was inagurated last May 1, 2008. The facility is now one of 17 local projects registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) based in Bonn, Germany. The said facility is designed to captured methane came from the dump site of Payatas to generate as much as 42,000 megawatts of electricity. The Payatas dump site facility is estimate to capture an equivalent of 116,000 tons of carbon dioxide is currently the biggest emission facility registered with the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) for the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) trade.
It is the first municipal solid waste recovery facility in the Philippines. Small hog farms only produce 2 to 10 tons of carbon dioxide while the Payatas dump site facility 116,000 tons. Let’s just hope that this facility will be handled very well, if this projects success then for sure additional facility will be installed in many problematic dump site in the Philippines.
